Kids and I saw one very up close here in San Jose many years ago.  Several reports were made to Mufon at that time.  It looked very much like you and Pam and this last post describe.  No lights, no sound, just above the treetops.  It was very late at night, not many people out.  We were heading home from either watching another meteor shower or a comet?  Don't remember which.  But it was a triangle craft, grayish, maybe a bit larger than a Cessna?  It seemed to reflect the cloud cover above it, even underneath, but it wasn't shiny?  It wasn't moving too fast as we were able to follow it for about a mile or so.  We first saw it on Monterey Hghwy, and then had to cut a few blocks over to catch up with it again.  Finally lost it at an intersection as we had to stop!  It was at least as large as the intersection.   But the interesting part was the "Pot holes" that eventually developed in those very same areas, 3 seperate roads, following it's path.  Probably more than a dozen or so, very large potholes, esp. on Monterey.   The road on Monterey is still rippled along there.  Took them forever to repair as they seemed to be having problems finding something to fix them with permanently?  Those spots kept caving in somewhat?   Think they finally had to pump some sort of foam or something beneath the road there?  Course we never heard about that, just something I noticed.  I think of that everytime I drive that section.  Always thought it to be something military!

Oh, btw, watch for a line of small quakes, one after the other, following the path you saw?   Let me know if you find anything interesting!
